How to Care for Your Tape-In Extensions to Make Them Last

Tape-in extensions are an investment — and with the right care, they can last through multiple installs and look gorgeous every single day. Here's everything you need to know to keep your extensions in top shape.

Washing Your Extensions

Wash your hair 2–3 times per week maximum. Over-washing can weaken the tape bonds and dry out the extension hair. Always use a sulfate-free shampoo and avoid applying conditioner or any oil-based products directly to the bonds — this can cause slippage.

When washing, work in a downward motion rather than scrubbing in circles. This prevents tangling and keeps the wefts lying flat.

Brushing and Detangling

Use a soft-bristle or loop brush specifically designed for extensions. Start from the ends and work your way up, holding the roots gently to avoid pulling on the bonds. Brush your hair at least twice a day — morning and night — to prevent matting.

Never brush wet extensions without first applying a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray. Wet hair is more fragile and prone to breakage.

Heat Styling

You can absolutely use heat tools on Remy human hair extensions — just always use a heat protectant spray first. Keep your tools below 180°C (356°F) and avoid applying direct heat to the tape bonds, as this can melt the adhesive.

Sleeping With Extensions

Before bed, loosely braid your hair or tie it in a low ponytail to prevent tangling overnight. Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and keeps both your natural hair and extensions smoother and healthier.

Maintenance Appointments

Tape-in extensions typically need to be moved up every 6–8 weeks as your natural hair grows. Don't skip these appointments — leaving extensions in too long can cause matting near the roots and put unnecessary stress on your hair.

Products to Avoid

  • Oil-based serums or conditioners near the bonds
  • Sulfate or alcohol-heavy shampoos
  • Heavy dry shampoos applied directly to the bonds

With a little extra care, your Ouielle tape-in extensions will stay beautiful, blended, and full of life. Have questions about your specific extensions? We're always here to help.
